Advancement of POLarimetric Observations (APOLO-2022)

August 9-12, 2022
Washington, DC, USA
Workshop cover
APOLO-2022 will be held August 9-12, 2022 in Washington, DC, USA. The primary topic is remote sensing with light polarization, including, but not limited to:
  • theoretical advances in polarimetry,
  • scattering by terrestrial aerosols, clouds, oceans, and land surfaces,
  • applications in astrophysics and planetary science,
  • polarimetric instrumentation,
  • retrieval algorithms and data processing,
  • satellite missions and field campaigns,
  • long-term calibration and validation, and
  • discussions on the life and legacy of Michael I. Mishchenko.
APOLO-2022 is the third of an international series of conferences. The first, APOLO-2017, was held in Hefei, China in October 2017, and the second, APOLO-2019, was held in Lille, France, in November of 2019.

The APOLO conferences aim to promote international collaboration and informal, but deep, scientific cooperation on polarimetric APOLO-2017 and APOLO-2019 have been published in the Journal of Quantitative Spectroscopy and Radiative Transfer (JQSRT). This tradition will continue for APOLO-2022.

Dr. Michael I. Mishchenko, one of the APOLO founders, passed away in 2020. He was one of the great minds of radiative transfer, author of more than 300 articles and seven monographs, a long-time employee of the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS), and editor for JQSRT and other journals. But for his untimely passing, he would have been involved in planning this conference as well. APOLO-2022 is dedicated to his legacy.
